Writing Prompt: The Drawings of a Six-Year-Old

Stay with me for this one, guys. It’s a bit crazier than usual. I’ve spent a lot of time around children because of work and family, and one of the many things I’ve learned from them is that inspiration comes in infinite forms. A lot of my own work is inspired by art or my own daydream doodlings, so I thought I’d try something different for this prompt.

First, grab two colored writing tools. Colored pencil will probably be best. Now draw a picture using ONLY the first letter of those colors. For example, if you chose purple, you can draw penguins, peanuts, pistachios, etc. BUT, you can’t draw anything that is actually the color of your pencil. Ex: you can’t draw purple grapes.

What is your picture of? Did you draw any animals? If you did, what would it look like if you combined them? Did you draw food? What dish can you make with them? Does it look like something a kindergartner drew? Have fun with it! You might not get a story out of this, but it’s good creative release. Besides, who doesn’t like to color?

Hopefully this is a good prompt for those of you who like to incorporate art into your writing!

Happy writing
